NMVMA Advocacy Group

A stronger political voice for veterinary medicine.

The NMVMA Advocacy Group is NMVMA’s Political Action Committee. It supports state-level candidates and elected leaders who understand veterinary practice and advance member-directed, Board-approved priorities.

Voluntary contributions from individuals using personal funds only. Not deductible as charitable contributions.

Clear responsibilities

Connected—not interchangeable.

The Committee develops policy recommendations. The NMVMA Board approves positions. The PAC builds political support around that approved direction.

Political lane

NMVMA Advocacy Group (PAC)

  • Builds political support around Board-approved priorities
  • Educates members, candidates, and elected leaders
  • Leads PAC fundraising and donor stewardship
  • Supports lawful state-level candidate and election activity

Does not: set NMVMA policy on its own or replace the Legislative Affairs Committee.

The PAC charge

Four mission-critical areas.

Adopted February 13, 2026, the PAC charge centers its work on the long-term health of veterinary practice and access to veterinary care across New Mexico.

Practice viability and financial stability

Support policies that ease financial pressure on veterinary professionals and practices, including student loan burden, rising operating costs, and the pressures that can limit services, hiring, and practice continuity.

Responsible business environment and fair competition

Promote transparency and accountability so independent practices can compete fairly and veterinary medical decisions remain grounded in patient care and professional judgment.

Scope of practice protection and patient safety

Protect the veterinarian-led care model through clear, evidence-based laws that preserve appropriate veterinary responsibility for diagnosis, treatment planning, prescribing, and surgery.

Ownership pathways and succession readiness

Advance practical pathways to practice ownership and transition so new graduates can pursue ownership and retiring owners can protect continuity of care in their communities.

How the work connects

From member experience to political support.

The process is coordinated and two-way: policy analysis informs political strategy, and insights from relationship-building help the association stay alert to emerging issues.

Member input

Practice experience, survey findings, listening, and direct feedback.
