Join as a student
Build evidence, not a perfect résumé Look for experiences that help you understand the work, practice clear communication, learn safe animal handling, and reflect on what fits. A thoughtful question and dependable follow-through matter. Ask what you may observe or do, how supervision works, what safety training is required, and how confidentiality is protected.

Built from student input

Students told us connection comes first.

In a 2026 NMVMA survey of 44 students, the strongest interests were practical and relationship-based.

91%wanted networking with New Mexico veterinarians
86%wanted New Mexico externships or rotations
84%wanted mentoring or short career conversations

Leadership, volunteering, wellness, and study support also ranked highly. These results guide NMVMA’s priorities; they are not a promise that every activity is available immediately.

NMVMA will keep listening as students move through training. The goal is to build opportunities with students, not simply for them, and to be clear when an idea is still being developed. Feedback also helps NMVMA focus limited time on the connections students will actually use.

Tell us what would help you take the next step.

Share your school or program, training year, interests, and the kind of connection that would be useful. NMVMA can keep you informed as opportunities develop.

Interest does not commit you to a program, mentor, job, or volunteer role.

If you are not sure what to ask for, name the decision in front of you. It might be choosing a path, finding an externship, meeting someone in a field, understanding New Mexico practice, or preparing for a first job.
