Coming Up: Events That Connect Veterinary Medicine and Community

NMVMA has several exciting events ahead that reflect where the association is going next: practical learning, stronger community connection, and more visible public engagement.

April 25: Going Viral in Las Cruces

On Saturday, April 25, the Las Cruces Museum of Nature & Science will host a public talk with New Mexico veterinarian and NMVMA Board member Dr. Meredith Brown. In this engaging program, Dr. Brown will discuss her research in Mongolia, her discovery of feline immunodeficiency virus in Pallas cats, and what the health of wild feline species can teach us about the diseases we see in our own pet cats.

This event is a great example of what NMVMA hopes to do more of through Caring for New Mexico: bring veterinary medicine into public view in ways that are accessible, interesting, and grounded in real expertise. It is designed to appeal to veterinary professionals, students, cat lovers, and members of the public who are curious about science, animal health, and conservation.

This event is free and open to the public.

May 22: Save the Date: Zoo CE Collaboration

We are also pleased to share a save-the-date for an upcoming NMVMA continuing education collaboration with the ABQ BioPark Zoo, now tentatively planned for Friday, May 22, 2026.

Details are still being finalized, so we are not ready to say too much yet, but this event is shaping up to be a unique opportunity for veterinary professionals to learn in an engaging setting while connecting with colleagues and partners in a different kind of environment. More information will be shared soon.

Public Health CE in Development

In addition, NMVMA is working with the New Mexico Department of Health, the New Mexico Livestock Board, and the New Mexico Veterinary Diagnostic Lab on a broader series of public health CE events now in the planning stages.

These efforts reflect what members told us in the survey and listening tour: they want continuing education that is practical, relevant, and easier to access, with stronger connections across practice, public health, and the broader veterinary system. NMVMA’s engagement plan also points in that same direction, with a focus on accessible CE, stronger communication, and more visible community engagement.

Keep an eye on upcoming announcements and make plans to join us.
