By Adena Robertson, DVM, President, NMVMA
This is a new season for NMVMA, and I believe it is one of the most important in our organization’s recent history.
Over the last year and a half, we have worked with purpose to reinforce NMVMA’s structure and position the organization for stronger, more sustainable impact. We have organized our work around the key areas of our strategic plan: Structure and Governance, Membership Growth and Engagement, Practice Concerns, Advocacy and Legislative Engagement, and Public Awareness.
That work is already taking shape in meaningful ways.
Strengthening Our Foundation
We have updated our governance structure and strengthened how we lead, make decisions, and steward this organization. We have also developed and begun implementing a new investment strategy so we can be even better stewards of NMVMA’s resources.
At the same time, we are working to establish a 501(c)(3), which will open new opportunities to grow partnerships, expand support, and invest more deeply in the future of veterinary medicine in New Mexico.
Creating More Ways to Get Involved
We have worked to create more flexible and meaningful ways for members to engage with NMVMA. We know our community is busy, and we want involvement to feel possible, supported, and worthwhile.
That means offering opportunities that fit different schedules, leadership interests, and levels of availability, while also building the tools and support members need to contribute successfully and impactfully.
Expanding Advocacy and Legislative Engagement
NMVMA has become more active, more informed, and more engaged in advocacy. We have participated in the legislative session, strengthened our work with our lobbyist, and increased our focus on the issues affecting the veterinary team across New Mexico.
We are also forming a Political Action Committee so our voice is even stronger in the years ahead. That matters as we prepare for the 2027 60-day legislative session and continue to monitor emerging issues, including legislation related to the VPA and other matters that could affect veterinary practice, patient safety, and the future of our profession.
Raising Public Awareness
We are proud to have launched our public awareness campaign, Caring for New Mexico, to help more people understand the essential role veterinary teams play in protecting animal health, public health, and healthy communities.
With events ahead in Las Cruces, along with additional opportunities to involve the public in this work, we are building stronger visibility, stronger trust, and stronger connection between veterinary medicine and the communities we serve.
Listening and Planning for What Comes Next
Just as important, we have learned a great deal from our recent survey and listening tour. Your input is helping us better understand the priorities, concerns, and hopes of the veterinary community, and it is shaping the next two years of our strategic work.
