Advocacy and Leadership
The Work Before the 2027 Legislative Session
Effective advocacy begins long before a bill is introduced.
New Mexico’s next 60-day legislative session begins in 2027, but NMVMA’s preparation is already underway.
NMVMA leadership, the Legislative Affairs Committee, advocacy volunteers, and the association’s professional legislative consultant continue monitoring developments, strengthening relationships, and gathering information from veterinary professionals across the state.
The concerns members have raised remain central to that work: workforce recruitment and retention, veterinary technician roles, appropriate scope-of-practice safeguards, license portability, rural access, patient safety, public health, and the sustainability of veterinary practice.
Policymakers need more than general statements about workforce pressure or access to care. They need clear examples of how laws, regulations, and workforce conditions affect patients, clients, employees, practices, and communities. Those examples help NMVMA explain why veterinary medicine is part of New Mexico’s health, agricultural, economic, and rural infrastructure.
You do not need to be a policy expert to contribute. You need only be willing to describe what you are seeing and what would make a meaningful difference.
