What inspired you to become a veterinary professional?
(AH) I grew up surrounded by animals from my great-grandfather’s farm, and my parents tolerated my constant befriending of strays. Working alongside the mixed animal practitioner in my hometown of Tullahoma, TN, I was truly amazed how Dr. Dudley Singleton helped not only the animals in our community but also the people. He was truly part of the community, and I wanted to be a part of that type of relationship in the community.
What do you love most about your work in New Mexico?
(AH) I love the opportunity to offer new solutions to old problems that help our animals live longer, higher quality lives.
What’s one challenge in the profession today that you hope the next generation won’t have to face? Communication between professionals has changed dramatically in the 37 years that I have been a veterinarian. I hope that our next generation concentrates on camaraderie not competition.
What role do you believe NMVMA should play in shaping the future of veterinary medicine?
(AH) NMVMA can truly be the mouthpiece for camaraderie amongst veterinarians, technicians and lay personnel involved in the veterinary industry.
What advice would you offer to someone just starting out in this profession?
(AH) Looking back at the last 37 years of my veterinary career, I tell those just starting the path as a veterinarian to remember to care for self so that you can care for others; look for the brightest part of every day because those parts supply your energy and learn something new everyday.
My motto:
(AH) Always do the right thing even if it is the hardest.
