What inspired you to become a veterinary professional?
(LW) It is very cliché, but I wanted to be a veterinarian because I loved animals, large and small. I always gravitated toward them, wanted to be with them, and take care of them.
What do you love most about your work in New Mexico?
(LW) When I did large animal mainly, I loved being outdoors with the animals and nature. Now that I mostly do shelter medicine, I love the difference that every spay and neuter makes on the overall health and well-being of the animal population.
What’s one challenge in the profession today that you hope the next generation won’t have to face?
(LW) Being a woman who graduated in 1986, there was still a stigma attached to a female veterinarian working on large animals. I hope that in the future, women veterinarians face less of a challenge.
A meaningful moment in my career:
(LW) I am very proud to have recognized and diagnosed several zoonotic and reportable diseases in NM. I am also very proud to have raised my children around the veterinary profession.
Advice to someone just starting their career:
(LW) Always keep in mind the importance of work/life balance. This career is very rewarding, but it can be physically and emotionally challenging. Remember that you are not alone and reach out to someone for help. Don’t try to struggle through the hard times on your own, and always celebrate your successes and accomplishments.
